The Scientific Programs or Reserach lines at the IES are:
This activity is focused on Quantum Mechanic band diagrams and optoelectronic properties of photovoltaic materials, using concepts of quantum chemistry and solid state physics.
The object of this Program is to study the conversion limits when converting saolar energy into electricity. It is also involved in identifying mechanisms which could drastically improve the present performance of this conversion.
The objective of this Program is the research into photovoltaics converters based on III-V semiconductors and which can opperate efficiently under very high luminous power densities. The field of interest include the theory, design, technology, manufacturing and characterization of the devices and the systems that incorporate them. In all cases the possibility of transferring the results to industry is a goal and thus costs analysis is always carried out.
The objective of this Program is to give support to both Spanish and European crystalline silicon solar cell industry, which make up the majority of those present in the market, in order to help them reduce costs as well as helping them develop new products.
System and Instruments Integration
The objective of this Program is the devepoment of equipment, instruments and methods for the measurement and characterization of solar cells collectors, thermophotovoltaic systems and plants both in the laboratory and in the open air. Likewise, it is involved in the development of prototypes, new concentration systems and concepts, even larger plants derived from these in collaboration with, on very many occasions, companies and/or other public institutions.
The objective of this group is the study of the specific problems associated with the enginnering of photovoltaic systems, both in isolation and connected to an electric grid. Special emphasis is paid to the aspects relative to the control of the technical quality by means of easily reproduced procedures in the local environment. From the experience acquiered in its laboratory trials and the evaluation of real projects, it supports the manufacturing industry of Photovolotaic equipment: charge regulators, luminaries, ect.
