Alzheimer: A challenge for biomedical technology

“Alzheimer: A challenge for biomedical technology” is the title of the summer course at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid which will take place at the Centro de Congresos y Convenciones del Parador de La Granja on 20 and 21 July. It will be led by Francisco Del Pozo, researcher and director of the Centre for Biomedical Technology of the UPM (CTB-UPM) belonging to the Campus Montegancedo.

This summer course at the UPM will try to provide an accurate profile of the progress in various technological fields Alzheimer's disease, and highlight the role that biomedical technology research is having in diagnosis and treatment.

The increase in life expectancy in developed countries has increased the concern for the needs and diseases associated with aging. One of the social disorders that cause more concern is Alzheimer. This disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive loss of cognitive abilities.

The enormous impact of this disease is boosting multiple approaches to diagnosis and treatment: the search for effective pharmacological treatments, the development of methods for early diagnosis of disease and predicting what people will develop it, care for patients and families non-pharmacological treatments, etc.. These approaches require collaboration from different knowledge areas among which are always essential the participation of biomedical technology.
