PhD Programme

Duration

UPM establishes two types of temporary duration on the “Regulations for the elaboration and evaluation of the doctoral thesis”, where different periods are contemplated:

  • Full time training. Duration will be from a minimum of one to a maximum of three years, counting from the entry to the doctoral programme up to the depository of the doctoral thesis.

  • Part time training (prior to the authorization of the UPM Commission for Doctorate). Duration will be  from a minimum of one to a maximum of five years, counting from the admission of the candidate to the doctoral programme up to the depository of the doctoral thesis.

These periods can be extended in both cases: one year plus an additional one in exceptional cases for the full time training modality; two year plus an additional one in exceptional cases for the part time training modality.

Neither sick or pregnancy leaves, nor other causes provided for by regulations in force, will be taken into account for the purpose of the time period count.

Doctoral students may also request a temporary leave for a maximum period of one year, extendable by additional year in exceptional cases.
